Customer Challenge / Issue
Poor paper sizing can significantly compromise both product quality and process stability. Inadequate or excessive sizing affects ink absorption, leading to issues like smudging, poor print definition, or ink repellency. Surface defects such as mottling, gloss inconsistency, and color distortion are also common. Chemically, improper sizing can cause stickies, interfere with retention and drainage systems, and trigger unwanted interactions with fillers or dyes. These effects are often linked to incorrect pH levels, poor emulsification, or insufficient drying, all of which reduce the effectiveness of ASA or AKD agents and increase the risk of process instability.

Benefits
To improve the sizing system cost and efficiency, Axchem will conduct a survey to choose the most suitable system based on the application. The AXSIZE® products can suit either for printing and writing or packaging. We have two mains’ technologies in sizing. AKD and ASA, AKD emulsions are supplied already emulsified, while ASA is emulsified on-site with appropriate Axchem equipment and adequate polymer or starch. Axchem also offers the broadest ASA emulsifier technology portfolio.
Besides the sizing program, the paper machine has to have a good retention system so the sizing can fix to the fiber. Axchem is here to help you find the right retention program with our AXFLOC® range to improve retention and sizing.
